The Swedish authorities have appealed for volunteers to help fight hundreds of fires which in the last few days have destroyed several thousand hectare's of forest in central and northern Sweden. The fires have been caused by the thunderstorms after the longest, hottest summer of the decade.
A spokesman for the fire brigade in Varmland. the province worst hit. said: "Every time lightning strikes it sets fire to the undergrowth. It's like a tinder box out there."
Meteorologists said that most of the- rain fell in the thunderstorms . had evaporated in the extreme heat before it could reach the ground.
