Grocery price rises likely

Supermarket customers are likely to come across a number of price increases when next they go shopping. The assistant sales manager . of , G.U.S. Wholesalers, Ltd, Mr B. O’Callaghan, said last evening that retail prices were likely to rise soon. This followed up changes made to the sale value provisions of the Sales Tax Act on Budget night. Where goods were sold by a manufacturer to a retailer,

the sale value became the price at which the goods were sold plus 15 per cent. The same applied to any person who bought direct from the wholesaler. This meant that goods attracting 40 per cent sales tax (for example, toiletries) might rise 6c in the dollar. Goods attracting 20 per cent sales tax (for example, confectionery) might increase 3c in the dollar, said Mr O’Callaghan. - ■ Earlier report, page 2
