Canterbury, Wellington win through to final

Canterbury and Wellington qualified for today's national women’s soccer tournament final after winning their semi-finals at Burnside Park yesterday. Canterbury beat Taranaki, 4-2, in a penalty shoot-out held after extra time had left the sides tied at 0-0, while a second-half goal to Maureen Jacobsen was enough for Wellington to oust the defending champion. Auckland, 1-0.

Canterbury should have had its game against Taranaki sewn up before the referee. Mr Des Manifold, pointed to the spot for the penalty series. The home side, through the efforts of its forwards, Carrol Adamson, Michelle Hudson and Ingrid Hall in particular, created far more opportunities than its opponents but could not find the back of the net.

This reached a peak near the end of the second 10 minutes-spell of extra time

when a Julia Campbell cross sailed through the goal area past the feet of two Canterbury pla’yers who had the goal at their mercy. Earlier, Canterbury was centimetres wide of a goal when Adamson, faced with an empty net from about 25m, hit the. upright with a drive. The chance came after 22 minutes when Taranaki’s New Zealand representative goal-keeper, Graszia Macintosh, knocked the ball loose after colliding with a Canterbury striker, Rowena Fulham. Fulham featured in three of Canterbury's best remaining attempts, with two good headers, one from an Adamson cross and another from a Hall free-kick, and a shot which was stopped. Hall was just high with a sizzling free kick.

A chip from Diane Wyss in the thirteenth minute that was held by the Canterbury 'keeper, Linda Robinson, was the closest Taranaki came to

scoring. At the conclusion of the hour of ordinary time and a further 20 minutes, Campbell slotted home the first penalty kick to make it 1-0. Taranaki’s first effort was held out by Robinson, and although a’ failed Fulham effort made it two out of three each, a miss by Taranaki’s Marie-Jose Cooper meant Canterbury, with four conversions,. could not lose.

For Canterbury, Adamson; whose nifty footwork consistently took her' past opponents, and Hudson, who worked hard in the mid-field before leaving injured, stood out, while the defensive work of Taranaki's Diane Anderson made life difficult for the home side. Results: Canterbury 4 (J. Campbell, I. Hall, T. Faichnie, C. Adamson), Taranaki 2 (R. Armstrong, J. Morrow) all penalties. Wellington 1 (Jacobsen), Auckland 0.
