Australia retains ice skating cup
NZPA Adelaide Australia has retained the Tasman Cup for speed skating with a convincing victory over New Zealand. Australian skaters won all but one of the senior events in the two days of competition at the suburban Thebarton ice-skating centre in Adelaide last Sunday and Monday. But both days saw exciting racing with the winning margins much closer than the final points tallies. All the Australian skaters were from South Australia. The men’s events were
dominated by Danny Kah, who won over 3000 m, 1500 m, 1000 m and 500 m. A second 500-metre event was won by Australia’s Neil Jamieson. New Zealand's Mark Atkinson was first across the line in a second 1000 metres race but was disqualified for forcing a passage, and fellow New Zealander, Tim McDonald, was promoted to first place. In the senior women's events, Australia’s Gail Sandercock won at 250 m, 500 m and 1500 m. Her Australian team-mate, Karen Gardiner, won the 1000 metres.
