Avonside I gains unbeatable lead
Avonside I won its eighth consecutive Christchurch winter table tennis championship when it beat University, 10-2. at the Selwyn Street hall on Wednesday.’
The Avonside line-up of Maurice Burrowes, the topranked Canterbury player, Michael Burrowes. ranked sixth and Bill Scott, ranked ninth; cleared out to an unbeatable six-point lead.in the competition with only two rounds remaining.
And while the Avonside club’s No; 1 team chalked up its thirteenth win from 14 outings. Linwood 11, lying in second place, lost any chance of catching up when it unexpectedly lost to Avonside 111, 4-8.
In the remaining games, Riccarton I beat Linwood I by a surprisingly convincing 16-2, and Dallington edged out Riccarton 11, 7-5.
The Burrowes brothers made sure their club took the winners’ title with three wins each against- a strong University combination that included last year’s Canterburry champion, Michael Prisk.
In the feature singles match, Maurice Burrowes barely raised a sweat in beating Prisk, 21-10. 21-10. Prisk. aged 18, had difficulty timing his forehand drives correctly and his unforced
errors made life easy for Burrowes.
Prisk looked to be finding his form in the last bracket of singles but it wasn't enough for him to beat Michael Burrowes. who capped off an impressive evening by beating the student, 15-21, 21-12, 21-19.
University’s only consolation came when Prisk and Peter de Boer beat Scott in the singles.
Meanwhile, a Canterbury selector, Brian Wilson, set the seal on Avonside Ill's surprise win when he outplayed the Canterbury champion, Michael Hamel, to win 21-17, 21-12.
Wilson had earlier upset the Canterbury representative player, Steven Dixon, 2118, 21-16. Dixon played his usual aggressive brand of table tennis but had trouble with Wilson’s varied, spin returns.
The Riccarton trio of John Armstrong, Alan Alabaster and Colin Tipper made a clean sweep of their singles against the flagging Linwo'od I, while John Gagliardi and Robert Jongenburger scored two wins each to put Dallington on the way to its 7-5 win.
