$1M ‘needed to start trout farm’

Parliamentary reporter Reaction to the claim that farmed salmon is being dumped as pet food has drawn attention away from the political and economic reasons why trout farming was a very doubtful proposition at this stage, said the

member of Parliament tor Taupo (Mr R. N. McClay). On today's costs, about $1 million would be needed to set up a trout farm that produced 100 tonnes of fish a year. There would be no financial return for at' least two years, said Mr McClay.

There would be intense competition, from overseas for markets. With additional transport costs, it was doubtful whether New Zealand trout could be sold more cheaply. The domestic market was likely to resist high prices for farmed trout, he said.

There was also the danger that new strains of ova from overseas could introduce disease to New Zealand trout. Mr McClay said that the public should be able to fish for trout in public waters without the constraints that trout farming would bring.
