Local firm wins Designmark

Flewellen and Lipscomb, Ltd, a semi-finalist for the Prince Philip Award, has won the Designmark by the Industrial Design Council for excellence of design and industrial application of its crane track wheels. The wheels are manufactured from S.G. iron because of its strength, long wear characteristics and excellent machining characteristics. The gear ring is manufactured from steel and is detachable from the wheel for simplicity of manufacture so as to be readily removed if required to be replaced. The axles are of a pullthrough design to enable ease of assembly, and can be removed with the crane in

place merely by taking weight off the wheel. The bearings are protected by “Vee-rings” to avoid ingress of foreign matter, while at the same time acting as a grease release valve. The grease nipples are recessed to avoid accidental damage but still allowing ease of access for greasing through the centre of the axle. The wheels are machined without sharp edges and have an appealing profile. The wheels come in two standard capacities: up to 7.5 tonnes and up to 12-tonnes maximum static axle load. Other wheels are available up to 35-tonnes static axle loads.
