Cruelty to dogs

Sir,—Having just received a reply from Mr Brian Davies, executive director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, it is’ obvious that , the endeavours of thousands of people, not only in New Zealand, but other countries, have made their objections known about the slaughter of dogs in the Philippines. They have , done this by signing petitions' or writing - individual letters and, according to Mr Davies’s letter, their efforts have not been in vain, According to the letter, Mrs Imelda R. -Marcus (First Lady of the Philippines • and Governor of Metro Manila) has devised a wide range of animal protective measures which include a ban on the eating of dogs. Mr Davies concludes by saying “Dog eating in the Philippines will be

<ut by some 50 per cent in the near-term and will likely be banned entirely by the end of the year." — Yours, etc.,

LEONNE WATSON. August 4. 1982.
