Experiments using animals
-Sir,—What scant reverence for life of any kind must surely be possessed by one who finds humour in the senseless cruelty that is vivisection. P. Melville (July 27) would do well to save his rich humour for a topic more deserving of it. Like N. W. Milanovich, whose caring letter followed, I also look forward, and work towards the day when the needless suffering and exploitation of innocent creatures ends—Yours, etc., W. ROSS. July 27, 1982.
Sir,—Obviously there is no point in appealing to P. Melville’s sensitivities over animal experimentation. His humour is cruel and nasty and completely misplaced. He should reserve his sarcasm to highlight and mock the real iniquities in our society — perhaps, however in a more positive vein, he could try compassion. For some of the 4.5 million laboratory animals who suffered, sometimes dreadfully in experiments last year, that compassion is long overdue. — Yours, etc., BARBARA DUFF. July 28, 1982.
