Rare ‘Star’ issues
The Canterbury Public Library now owns the onlyexisting copies of the Christchurch "Star," dating from 1868 to 1935. The newspapers were given to the library because the “Star” decided’ it would be too expensive to have a commercial firm rebind them, said a librarian, Mr Richard Greenaway. It would have cost $BO to bind each volume, and there are more than 100 volumes. Mr Greenaway said that if the library had not accepted the newspapers they would
have been destroyed. The library has its own bindery and lias spent two months over the last year rebinding and covering the newspapers. Some of the newspapers are still being microfilmed by the National Library, in Wellington. so it will be some time before the Canterbury library finishes the rebinding. The library already has sets of "The Press." the "Weekly Press." the “Sun." the “Lvttelton Times," the "Christchurch Times." and the "Globe."
