Talks on Falkland link

NZPA-Reuter Port Stanley Mr Rex Hunt, the Civil Commissioner of the Falkland Islands, favoured a looser association between the colony and Britain, he told a news conference at the week-end. Mr Hunt, the former Governor of the Falkland Islands, said: “I think it would be better to work towards a looser arrangement with Britain."

He spoke'of independence within the Commonwealth with complete self-govern-ment. and suggested that Britain could look after defence and foreign affairs. Mr Hunt said that the islanders would have to decide what they wanted, and he favoured an early election in about six months for the Legislative Council. He said a status that was not colonial would be more acceptable .to the world.
