Play centres report disputed

Canterbury play centres are very much alive in spite of an Education Department suggestion to the contrary, said the Canterbury Playcentre Association president. Mrs H. Cook. The department's annual report tabled in Parliament said that the changing aspirations of women and other socio-economic factors were leading to a preference for kindergartens over playcentres in some communities. Many parents were losing the ability and desire for involvement at the level needed to provide experienced personnel and resources for play centres.

Mrs Cook said that the Canterbury association disputed the department analysis of statistics used in its report. The number of children attending Canterbury play centres had risen from 1880 in 1979 to 2068 last year, while the number of parents training as helpers went from 578 to 804. That trend was continuing in spite of the economic climate and falling birth rate. Play centres dealt with children from birth until they entered school but competed with kindergartens only in the three to five-year-old range.
