Liquor licences

Sir,—ln reply to M. A. Wilson (July 20) concerning liquor licences, in 1980 there were 12,582 alcohol-related offerees detected on the New .Zealand roads (ref. Ministry of Transport). Half the adult male drownings in New Zealand had

an alcohol involvement (ref. New Zealand Water Safety Council). There are 60,000 alcoholics and 200,000 hazardous drinkers in New Zealand (Minister of Health, 1981). The number of liquor outlets has risen from 2012 in 1970 tq 4000 at present (ref. Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council). There also is a growing concern for the foetal alcohol syndrome where New Zealand babies are at risk of facial distortion and retardment, An increase in liquor licences does not reduce the consumption of alcohol in ’.arge, small, noisy or quiet places. I am not sure what M. A. Wilson means by a “wowser" but if it means an exponent of an alcohol-free way of life then I am proud to be one, rather than a pusher of drug alcohol. — Yours, etc.,

M. A. HOGAN. July 20, 1982.
