Tabua given back

Ancient Fijian etiquette was observed in Christchurch yesterday when StaffSergeant Raikadroka (above) received three tabua (whale teeth) on behalf of the Royal Fijian Military Forces. The tabua were originally presented to the late Lieu-tenant-Colonel R. A. Tinker by the Ist Battalion, Fiji

Infantry Regiment, when he was its commanding officer in the early 19505. The presentation of tabua is an ancient Fijian custom, and is made on rare occasions to dignitaries or to ~ people who have made an outstanding contribution to Fijian society. It is customary for the recipient’s family to return

the tabua after the recipient dies. Colonel L. G. Williams, representing the Tinker 'family, returned the tabua during yesterday’s ceremony at the King Edward Barracks. The ceremony included the drinking of kava, a traditional beverage, and speeches in Fijian.
