Mrs Pese to leave N.Z. today

PA Auckland The Tongan overstayer, Mrs Sulieti Pese, who provoked a public outcry when she was imprisoned and separated -from her young baby earlier this week, will be deported today. Mrs Pese and her five children, who are all New Zealand citizens, are booked on the afternoon flight to Tonga.' The $lO4O cost of their fares will be met by the Government. The outcry surrounding Mrs Pese’s case resulted from her separation from her baby daughter, aged

eight weeks, after her arrest on Saturday. She had been reporting to the police weekly since June, after being convicted of overstaying in February last year. Mrs Pese was examined by a doctor and staff nurse from National Women’s Hospital before she was imprisoned. She was released on Monday after the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay) intervened and ordered that mother and baby be reunited. The Pese family has been staying at a Salvation Army emergency lodge for women and children.
