‘Govt could save on benefits’
PA Wellington The Government could save money on social benefits if it increased subsidies to voluntary organisations, said the chairman of Barnardos. New Zealand, Mr Graeme Bringans. In the organisation's annual report, Mr Bringans said that domestic purposes benefits cost the Government eight times as much as a payment of the child care subsidy.
Voluntary organisations such as Barnardos receive a subsidy of $15.50 a week for every child whose parent could not meet the cost of child care fees. But since the Government changed the criteria for subsidy claims, last November, the onus of financial support had shifted from the Government to Barnardos, he said. “During a year when the Government is trying to reduce expenditure there is a danger that subsidies to
voluntary organisations will be held back or even reduced,” he said.
Mr Bringans said that Barnardos had increased its number of projects and could
care for 850 children at a time. In one year. 2000 children receive help. The organisation lost $75,000 last year, because of its expansion.
