Advertising allowed
New Zealand w’ines may now be advertised at Christchurch Airport. In 1979, the City Council decided to ban cigarette and alcohol advertising at the airport. The exception has now been allowed on a 10-9 vote. New Zealand wines will be advertised as an accompaniment to dining. Cr D. C. Close, led a debate against changing the advertising principle. The council promoted public health, and Should not. also promote the increased consumption of alcohol, he said. Cr M. F. Fahey said the country badly needed to change its drinking habits. Food consumption should be emphasised, he said, “not just beer divorced from good food.”
The breweries were doing “nothing to promote fhe positive side of road safety,” he said.
