Dashing trial by Whirl
The Nelson-trained Whirl came up with one of the best gallops of the training at Riccarton yesterday. An acceptor for the Johnny Walker Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday, Whirl sprinted 1206 m on the No. 7 grass in Imin 19.5 sec. reeling off the opening 600 m in 36.55ec. The track had been eased by overnight rain, but Whirl acted well in the conditions.
Silver Print and River Mellay, both from Peter Jones's stable, returned Imin 21.8 sec for their 1200 m, and 41sec for the final 600 m.
Penny Treiay followed in Imin 21.4 sec, the last 600 m in 40.4 sec. Accelerate recorded Imin 22.8 sec, running the last 600 m under a snug hold in 41.8 sec. Zarafa showed he had shaken off the effects of a virus which affected the standard of his performance at Wingatui by sprinting 600 m in 39.8 sec. This effort
was equalled by the stablemates Fairway Lass and Loriarna.
Fairway Lass did not fare as well as Elsie, another member of the Pitman stable, in the barrier draw for the Craigmore Handicap at Washdyke and it was not certain yesterday if both would run.
King’s Robe and. Just A Rebel ran the last 600 m of their work in 39sec. Auchentoshan recorded 39.45ec in beating Greek’s Pride over 600 in.
- Bob Register plans to run Auchentoshan in the Cashmere Plate at Riccarton on August 7, then will prepare the Double Speed filly in the John Grigg Stakes. Ay Em and Acadia, both entrants for the Christchurch Hunt’s Brabazon Handicap next week, ran 600 m on terms in 39.55ec. Gentle Touch and Fondle followed in 37.8 sec and Octane and Tipsy Too in 39.65ec.
