Arthur’s Pass road reopened
• Graders were used yesterday morning to reopen the Arthur's Pass link with the West Coast. The road had been closed to all traffic on Monday evening after heavy snowfalls, and chains were still advisable last evening, said the Automobile Association (Canterbury). The Lewis Pass was clear, but the weather in the area was reported to be ‘‘gloomy and deteriorating.” It took Ministry of Works and Development machinery until mid-morning yesterday to forge a single-lane track through the 450 mm <lBin) of snow which lay on Arthur's Pass.
There was about 100 mm (4in) of snow on the Lewis Pass yesterday morning. The" main South’ Island high-country roads were all reported to be open last evening, although winter conditions made care essential. The Weather Office predicted more scattered snowfalls in the ranges north of Arthur's Pass last night, with rapidly clearing weather south of the pass. Yesterday's overcast and cold weather over Christchurch and CanterburyPlains was also expected to give way to gradually clearing skies and warmer temperatures later today.
