Shipping news Tasman carrier laid off
Maritime .Carriers, Ltd, has announced that it is laying up one of its three ships, the motorvessel Dunedin.
"Many factors, including trade volumes which have not lived up to expectations, have caused us considerable financial' losses and hence the need to rationalise our service,” said the company’s chairman, Mr E. J. Neilson. “We are therefore going to consolidate our Tasman operation by laying up the Dunedin and withdraw from serving the ports of Napier and New Plymouth,” he said.
The company would also withdraw from the Port of Bluff. After a trial period of six months the service there had been found to be uneconomic.
Mr Neilson said the Totara would continue on her Auckland, Sydney. Melbourne triangle. The Waitaki would start a new schedule running between Lyttelton, Wellington, Sydney, and Mel-
bourne, offering customers a 21day service between these ports. Maritime Carriers, a subsidiary of Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating, Ltd, has run a liner service in the Tasman since early 1978.
