Meat dispute settled

PA Wellington A dispute over salaries of New Zealand’s ' 1600 meat inspectors at freezing works ■has been settled, according to the Public Service Association yesterday. The association’s president. Mr D. H. Thorp, said that agreement had been reached on a package deal, including ■salaries.

“This is a carry-over from the 1981 negotiating round and as such is permitted by the Wage Freeze Regulations," he said.

Mr Thorp did not release details, saying that the settlement would be referred to the Government for ratification next week. The dispute was about the cancellation by the State Services Commission of a 10.7 per cent pay increase, which was to have applied from January 1. The commission’s action was the result of alleged defiance by meat inspectors of procedures for settling disputes. It was prompted by a walk-out by inspectors al the Rangiruru works near Te Puke. The P.S.A. had offered surplus inspectors for a deerslaughtering plant at Kaimai but the offer had been rejected.
