Risky Step steps lively

By

J. J. BOYLE

Riskv Step, a form runner in the'hurdles at Waimate, came more strongly into reckoning with an attractive winding-up gallop at Riccarton yesterday. He ran 1200 m on one of the inside grasses in I min 17s, the last 600 m in 39.85. Trialists had firm footing after a frost. Mhorso, one of the reserves for the Redliffe Handicap, gave Gay Repaire a start of five lengths from the 1200 m, but ran up

strongly in the straight to take the honours of the gallop. Gay Repaire ran the distance in Itnin 18s. Mhorso ran his final 600 m in close to 375. Wattie’s Girl and Watese, two of the earliest workers, sprinted 600 m on terms in 40.85. Weinmeister followed in 36.95, and his stablemate, Treacle, returned 39.65. Fairway Lass led King of Joy through 600 m in 38s. Just a Rebel and Tipsy Too followed in 38.65.

Bilberry could have .easily bettered Imin 21.45, the last 600 m in 40s. She has thrived in the last few weeks. Binkie’s Double and Loriarna hurried in from the 600 m in 36.65. On that run Binkie’s Double rates something of a chance in the Cochrane Memorial at Waimate. Handsome Heir led his stablemate Ay Em by a length and a half after sprinting 1000 m, the last 600 m in 37.45.
