Mr Cant steps down
Mr A. R, (Rolle) Cant has retired from the board of directors of the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd, because of the retirement regulations (article 95 of the articles of association). Mr Cant, who has been a director for 18 years, joined "The Press" literary staff 55 years ago, became assistant editor in 1949, and was editor from 1957 until 1973.
The company's chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane) told shareholders at the annual general meeting that it was a sad occasion.
"Long service has not been unusual in our company,” Mr Macfarlane said. “Mr Cant’s father is another example. He worked in the commercial department of the company and retired, as accountant, after 61 years’ service.” “Our readers, sthff, and shareholders owe much to Rolle Cant for his steady professional and principled contribution to guiding the newspaper,” Mr Macfarlane said.
