P.O.W.s go home

NZPA Puerto Madryn The vanquished commander of Argentina’s Falklands forces, Brigadier-General Mario Menendez and 592 other prisonets-of-war returned home yesterday. The move closed a chapter in the dispute with Britain over the archipelago, and cleared the way for an internal armed forces investigation.

The prisoners, most of them officers from the three service branches, arrived at Puerto Madryn aboard the British ferry St Edmund. They were thought to be men who had volunteered to stay on in the islands after the surrender to help the British clear minefields.

Heavy military security surrounded the disembarkation. They were received by high military officials and representatives of the International Red Cross.
