Fossils located
A collection-'of scientifically priceless plant fossils which were removed from the Canterbury Museum without record before the turn of the century have been returned. . i They were found at the Australian Museum in Sydney recently when a NewZealand palaeobdtanist (a botanist dealing in plant fossils) noted the Canterbury Museum labels On them. The 15 " fossils were recorded as being at the Canterbury Museum in a paper written about - 1883 by the Austrian palaeobotanist, von Ettingshausen, but they could not be found. It is now
thought they became included in a collection in Europe, before being sent to Australia for a collection there. A geologist at the Canterbury Museum, Mrs M. A. Bradshaw, said it was important that the fossils had come back. They had more scientific appeal than interest appeal, and for this reason would be kept in a safe, fireproof section of the museum. Mrs Bradshaw said the fossils were plants that had become bedded id sandstone or siltstone. It would be impossible to put a value on them.
