Cylinders on fire
A radio appeal was made for motorists to avoid part of Lincoln Road yesterday while firemen dealt with two burning ga*s cylinders. A 6 cu m acetylene cylinder and a 7.5 cu m oxygen cylinder caught fire on a trailer at 308 Lincoln Road just before 4 p.m. The area was quickly cleared because of the risk of an explosion. ■ Firemen were unable to get close because of a lack of "cover” as’they played water jets on the burning cylinders, to cool them,'•’according to a Fire Service.spokesman. The. Fire "Service is scon-; scious of the need to take advantage of any available cover in such situations after an Auckland firemen lost his legs when a burning gas cylinder exploded. Yesterday’s incident caused no injury or damage.
