Irish hope for more New Zealand tourists
NZPA London The Irish Tourist Board is hoping to get more New Zealanders visiting Ireland when Air New Zealand starts its service to London in August. "There were 5000 New Zealand visitors to Ireland last year and indications for this year are good." said Mr Derek Mulrooney, the board s manager 1 for Australia and New Zealand. The 36.000 New Zealanders and Australians who visited Ireland last year represented an increase of 12 per cent on 1980. Mr Mulrooney is looking at an increase of about 57 per cent next year.
‘‘New Zealanders are the longest-staying visitors in Britain and Ireland," he said. “They’re also good tourists
because they enjoy the freedom of things such as selfdrive cars so they can move about, which is what we like."
Ireland's national studs and sports facilities, including more than 200 golf courses, were among the attractions which appealed to New Zealanders.
Mr Mulrooney, who was speaking before flying to New Zealand, will be having talks with Air New Zealand in Auckland on possible joint promotions when the new London service starts.
The Irish Tourist Board is sponsoring a golf tournament in Methven on July 7 for Australian travel agents who are holding their convention in Christchurch.
