No peak power concessions

The Christchurch-based Clean Air Society is dissatisfied with the Government's rejection of its request for peak electricity concessions. The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) has told the society that concessions to encourage the use of electricity for home water heating in Christchurch were not acceptable. The existing ripple heating control was used only sparingly and cheaper power would mean increases for another area. The society's secretary. Mr P. V. Neary, said that hot water shortages caused by ripple cuts were common and some people had reverted to open fires with wetbacks for heating water The withdrawal of opportunities for home insulation loans was more Government "backsliding” on anti-air-pol-lution measures.
