Only six of the 362 complaints against the police arising from the 1981 Springbok tour had resulted in policemen being charged, said the Commissioner of Police, Mr R. J. Walton, in a long statement released yesterday. Mr Walton said that the 362 complaints had all been investigated, and all but two had been resolved. In six cases enough evidence had been found to warrant charging a member of the police. Two constables had appeared in District Courts on assault charges, and two sergeants and two constables had been dealt with by disciplinary tribunals on charges of using excessive force or unnecessary violence. Unless further evidence came to hand, no more charges against policemen were contemplated. Nor was any policeman still under investigation, said Mr Walton.
