Film of lions in Namibia

More than 500 lions live in Etosha National Park, in Namibia. The park covers an area about half the size of the South Island, yet its lions have problems over their living space.

Territorial boundaries are carefully marked out by the males, and inside these the prides live and hunt. The "Our World" programme. "The Lions of Etosha," on Two on Sunday at 6 p.m.. will look closely at the Ombiika pride, a 19-strong family of lions named after the waterhole at the centre of its territory. Filmed by Jen and Des Bartlett, the documentary will show how the pride lives, protected by two huge males, how it brings up its cubs, teaches them to hunt and how it reacts to other prides. It will include footage of pride hunts and kills and the efforts of a young male, over three unsuccessful weeks, to make his first kill on his own.

“The Lions of Etosha." an Anglia Television International production, is one of the most complete film studies of lions ever made.
