Fewer passengers
The number of passenger journeys on Christchurch Transport Board buses fell 6.1 per cent (60.870) in the four weeks to June 20. compared with last year, the board was told yesterday. In spite of this, revenue was up 11.3 per cent. The board's manager. Mr M. G. Tavlor. said he did not know the’cause ot the decline and would not know for another two weeks whether it was an aberration or a trend.
Passenger journeys for the first quarter of the year are down 4.2 per cent while revenue is up 11.3 per cent. Mr Taylor said that the
revenue rise, which came from fare increases earlier this year, had been higher than expected. When the fares were increased the average rise was expected to be 14.7 per cent. In fact, it is about 20 per cent. This was because there were more passengers on the outer district routes where a surcharge applied than had been expected. Mr Taylor said. “The surcharge passengers appear to be about 10 per cent of the total, which is significantly more than I would have expected." he said.
