Labour plans bill to help Patea

PA Wellington The Labour Party will introduce a bill setting down ■ constructive assistance" for Patea when Parliament resumes next week. The bill, to be introduced bv Mr T. K. Burke (West Coast), will relate to the closing of the Patea freezing works and other similar closings. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) said: "In recent weeks the Govern-

ment has had a great deal to say about the possibility of workers being laid off on the Clyde, purely because of the Government’s own incompetence and own political bloody-mindedness. "It has had a great deal less to say about the 80.000 other New Zealanders who have already lost their jobs under the Muldoon Government." About 800 jobs will be lost in Patea when the works close later this year.

Mr Rowling and tour Labour members of Parliament will visit Patea today. He will meet local people and give his support to their calls for a Government-spon-sored feasibility study for alternative uses for the works. It was essential that the Government used its resources to help the people to maintain their home commitments and find alternative work. Mr Rowling said.
