Basketball tournament
Ten teams, including six from the North Island., have been entered for • the Hertz men's invitation basketball tournament to be held in Timaru from August 10-14. ' The top qualifier will then join the winner of the North Island second division ehampionship at Palmerston North on August 2728 to play promolion-relegation matches against the two bottom teams in the Countrywide national league. . ./ The teams are' Napier. Hawera. Olagoi • Hutt • Valley. Canterbury B. Buller. Tauranga. South Canterbury. Nite Site Sainis (Wellington), and Burroughs Karori (Wellington).. The executive director of the New Zealand. Basketball Federation. Mr Joe McLeod.;said that, one of the North Island teams entered for Timaru would have to be deleted This will be the winner of the ‘.North ■', Island second division title, which will i not be known for a few weeks.
Canterbury B will not be eligible to play in the Palmerston North series. Canterbury already has a team in the national league and under the rules no individual city can have two teams in the cornpetition. Mr McLeod agreed with Canterbury . B's inclusion only after an assurance from the president of the Canterbury Basketball Association. Mr Peter Crowhen. that if Canterbury was the top qualifier in Timaru it would allow its place in the Palmerston North play-offs to be taken by the second-ranked Side?. The Canterbury association made application for a B side to be included at Timaru. mainly to give young players the chance of tournament ’ experience. The coach of Canterbury's league side; Mr Murray Mackay, said that he hoped that members of the league squad who had missed out on the final representation would be included in the team for Timaru
