Former Minister tipped for post
PA Wellington ji A former Minister of | Works. Mr W. L. Young, is | expected to become New | Zealand’s next High Commis- | sioner in London.
Mr Young, who lost his Miramar seat to the Labour candidate, Mr P. Neilson, in last year’s General Election, is believed to have been asked by the Government to take over from another former Cabinet Minister, Mr L. W. Gandar, later this year.
An announcement is expected soon. Mr Gandar, a former Minister of Education,- who was / also beaten at the polls, will end a three-year term at New Zealand House in London on July 14, and is thought. to be keen to return to New Zealand. r
Mr Young, who is 67, will be the latest in a line of
former Cabinet Ministers appointed to the post, which is traditionally a political appointment.
Mr Gandar succeeded a former Minister of Agriculture, Sir Douglas Carter, who in turn succeeded the former Labour Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Hugh Watt.' The High Commissioner in London is in charge of New Zealand’s biggest foreign post, which includes a lot of representational work. The Deputy High Commissioner’s post carries Ambassadorial ranking. The former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr B. E. Taiboys, has said he does not want a diplomatic posting but the former president of Federated' Farmers, Sir Allan Wright, was expected by many to get,the London post. ' •
