Social Welfare reviews

Sir,—The widespread cuts in social services are simply nonsensical when the Government can find S7BM to providenew transport for the Army. The type of economies being implemented by the Government are surely evidence that the feather-bedding of the armed services is a luxury beyond the heeds and means of the country. In today’s society citizens need a greater measure of protection, but this certainly exceeds the strewing of barbed wire around football grounds. Marked reduction in the armed services arid an increase in police numbers would be a much more profitable and effective way of using our resources. After all, .current events show our policemen in the firing line far more frequently than any of our servicemen. — Yours, etc., C. OLIVINE. July 1, 1982.
