Court frees journalists
NZPA Ushuaia Three British journalists charged with espionage during the Falklands crisis were released on bail yesterday after being detained since April 13. ' Federal Judge Enrique Sagastune said that lan Mather and Tony Prime of the “Observer” newspaper, and Simon Winchester of the “Sunday Times” had the right to seek permission to travel to Buenos Aires and leave the country.
judicial sources said that the journalists’ lawyer had already submitted his request to the Court after paying bail of 300 million pesos ($NZ20,340).
The correspondents were arrested near a military base north of Ushuaia, Argentina’s southernmost city, and were charged with taking photographs of military installations.
