‘Trainee teachers hardest hit’
Parliamentary reporter Trainee teachers will be the hardest -hit by the scrapping of the Student Services Programme, according to the Teacher Trainees’ . Association. A leaked report from the Education? Labour, and Social Welfare. Departments showed that the Government’s proposals to place teacher trainees on the tertiary assistance grant were even more disastrous than had first appeared. Not only, had the Government destroyed the system of financial support for
teacher trainees but it had done'’’-’sb knowing that trainees would not find holiday employment, and thus ’would be forced on to the dole, said the association’s president. Mr I. Dewar. He was angry about the report, which said the Government expected 3750 students, and trainees would have to go on the unemployment benefit next summer. Teacher trainees would be the hardest hit. They had a longer academic year than other tertiary students, arid would thus enter the very limited job market last, by which time all the vacation jobs would be taken.
