Reward offered for lost wine

A reward of $5OO has been offered for the return, unopened, of an 1832 bottle of champagne cognac that is missing from Warners Tavern wine cellar.

The wine, which had been bought at a Christie's wine auction in London for the opening last month of the Christchurch Cellar Club, was on sale at $3OOO. “From what I have seen it was the most expensive wine in New Zealand," said Warners bottle store manager. Mr Bernard Anderson. ' It was apparently taken between June 17 and June 20 from a rack where it kept company with $4OO Chateau Margaux clarets, $55 Dorn Perignon vintage champagnes, and other high-priced tipples. Nothing else was taken.

Security at the cellars has since been tightened. The wine was not insured against breakage or theft. The cognac was bottled by Berry Bros in a nondescript 750 ml bottle with a label that is much younger than the contents. Mr Anderson said that although very old wines were sometimes

/doubtful, there was no reason why this one was not drinkable.
