Fare-reduction study by Transport Board

Possible changes to the Christchurch Transport Board's fare structure will be studied in the light of the Government's wage and price freeze.

The board s chairman. Mr J. Mathison, said at yesterady's meeting that the ad hoc fares review committee would consider possible changes to fares and possibly make sortie recommendations. Mr T. N. D. Anderson said that the board might have a surplus higher than expected this year which could be a good opportunity to lower fares. •

"The decrease in passenger journeys compared with last year should be our main concern. I think we should look to decreasing fares to take advantage, of this possible surplus." he said.

Mr Anderson said that the board's main goal should be to transport people. Traffic flows The board will send a delegation to the next meeting of the Christchurch City Council s works and traffic committee to seek traffic management measures to reduce the delays experienced by board buses in Manchester Street between Armagh Street and Tuam Street. Particular reference will be made to the problems caused by right-turning traffic at the various intersections concerned. The board is worried about the build-up in traffic in Manchester Street since the closing of several inner-city streets for the construction of the shopping mall.._

The delegation will also seek permission for the council to allow it to use the space outside the United Service Hotel as a turn-round area for its North Beach buses.

The turning bay outside the United Service was used by the board's buses when Cathedral Square was redesigned in the early 19705. This continued until 1980 when the City Council declined to give the board further permission to use the turning zone because it was damaging the tiles. "The tiles should have been made stronger in the first place," Mr Mathison said.

Mr Anderson said that he would prefer to see all buses removed from the Square so that it could be left entirely for pedestrians.
