Exemption likely for Air N.Z.
PA Wellington A regulation to exempt Air New Zealand international air fares from the price freeze will be proposed to the Cabinet on Monday. The Minister of Transport (Mr Gair) said last evening it had always been believed that international fares would be outside the scope of the freeze. “The regulation I will propose to my colleagues will correct a deficiency in the price freeze regulations to make clear these fares are not subject to the freeze. He said that the airline’s international fare structure
was not intended to be covered by the freeze, because the* fares were the subject of international agreements between governments. Costs associated with overseas flights were related to international cost structures. The Trade and Industry Department had found earlier this week that fare increases ranging between 5 and 8 per cent which the airline planned to introduce on its North American routes were not exempt from the freeze. The increases were announced the day after the price freeze.
