Orienteers in dark

Christchurch orienteers will be literally completely ‘‘in the dark” when their next competitive event is held, on the University of Canterbun- campus on Saturday.

Strong torches and warm clothing will be essential, as the event does not start until 6 p.m. Top competitors can generally perform as well at night as in daylight events, although the reduced visibility increases demands on concentration and navigational skills. Graeme Frith, Dave Laurie, and Keith Brockway will start as favourites in the A’ course. Four courses, of varying degrees of difficulty, will be provided altogether. The novice course is set in better illuminated parts of the campus. The start is from the Clvde Road car park, near the Fores’trv buildings.
