DIC makes room for others

PA Wellington DIC, Ltd. the New Zealand chain store, is bringing independent retailers into their stores, it announced yesterday. DIC. trading in New Zealand since 1884. said a decision has been taken regarding the first and second floors of the Wellington Lambton Quay store. The company will continue to operate as at present on the ground floor, it said in a supplied statement. "Specialist retailers ■ are being given the opportunity to take up retail space on the . first and second floors, and trade under the ‘‘umbrella’’ of the DIC. “Substantial areas of retail space have been allocated to nationally-known retailers. Opportunities for a wide

range of retailers exist at present." The statement said that meetings have been held with staff and officers from the- Wellington Shop Assistants’ Union, and the Clerical Workers' Union to discuss the impact of the new programme. DIC staff in areas affected by the new retailers would be employed by the retailers at existing wage levels, and superannuation and other staff privileges would be maintained. The number of staff currently employed by the Wellington store was expected to substantially increase after the introduction of the programme.
