“Russian” or “Soviet”
Sir, — Your correspondent M. Creel is quite right; there is no racial discrimination in Russia, as everyone is op-
pressed equally. He is also quite right to object to the term "Russian” being applied to Ukrainians, who are really Little Russians or White Russians, as Muscovites are Great Russians or Red Russians. You might just as well call an Englishman a Briton, the old name for the Welsh. When M. Creel sings “Rule Britannia," he knows very well that the Britons who never, never, never will be slaves are really -Welsh. You don’t catch him calling Stalin a Russian, he always calls him a Georgian. I commend his accuracy to your readers. As for the so-called Russian football team, they should be called the European Soviet team, as the team includes no Asiatics. Rather like the South African Springboks, in fact. — Yours, etc T. M. RYAN. , Blenheim. June 25, 1982.
