Michael Houstoun may be finalist

PA Auckland A New Zealand pianist, Michael Houstoun, has qualified for the second round of the seventh Tchaikowsky International Competition being held in Moscow. The Timaru-born musician, aged 29. was one of 23 pianists chosen to go forward from the first round of 79 competitors. In a telephone call to New Zealand, a pleased but calm Mr Houstoun said that he had already given his secondround performances, but the 12 finalists would not be announced until later this week.

Mr Houstoun was third in the International Van Cliburn Competition in Texas in 1973 when he was only 20, and fourth in the Leeds competition two years later. More than 100 entries from 12 countries were reduced to 79 for the start of the contest two weeks ago. Three Australian entrants were eliminated in the first round, but five Russians and four Americans qualified for round two. In the first round, competitors were required to play a Bach prelude and fugue, a classic sonata, a contemporary work, and a work by Tchaikowsky.
