Auckland wins rugby
PA Auckland Scoring eight tries to one, Auckland outclassed Taranaki in a friendly rugby match at Eden Park yesterday, 47-7, after leading 21-7 at half-time. Although the Auckland backs did not play especially well, Taranaki had no counter, especially in the first half, against the powerhouse running of the Auckland forwards. In the first spell Auckland scored three tries, after an early penalty goal by Richard Fry, and all of them by the forwards, Greg Burgess, the prop Glenn
Rich, the outstanding flanker, and Gary Whetton, the lock, Taranaki lifted its forward game in the second half and managed to hold the Auckland forwards for long periods, but then the Taranaki defence began to falter and the Auckland backs took over the scoring, picking up four of the five second-half tries. Scores Auckland: 47 (J. Collinson (2), G. Whetton (2), G. Burgess, G. Rich, M. Mills, P. Corlett, tries; R. Fry, 6 conversions and a penalty.) Taranaki: 7 (B. Robins, try; S. Davidson, penalty.)
