Smallgoods give ‘value for money’

“New Zealand smallgoods .are versatile, nutritious and contain the flavour and protein demanded by the consumer," according to Mr Graeme Lowe, president of the New Zealand Association of Bacon Curers and Meat Processors (Inc.).

In presenting the annual report to the annual meeting of the association in Rotorua this week. Mr Lowe reminded members of the need to impress upon the consumer through promotion the value of smallgoods in the weekly food basket. According to Mr Lowe, research has shown that consumption of meat in New Zealand has reduced in recent, years.

"There is scope for reversing this trend by improving the image of smallgoods, increasing the range of products and emphasising the value for money in smallgoods relative to some other meats,” he said.

The report also offers support for the proposal to amalgamate the Pork Marketing Board and Pig. Industry Council. <

Mr Lowe pointed out that 75 per cent of all pigmeat slaughtered in New Zealand is cured for consumption as bacon and ham. “Therefore bacon curers have a vested interest to ensure that pig production is encouraged and maintained as a viable industry," he concluded.
