Antarctic air drop delayed

The United States Air Force midwinter airdrop over the Antarctic, scheduled • for Monday, has been, delayed a day. The United States Air Force Christchurch detachment commander. Captain Bill Dudley, said yesterday that the KCIO tanker which would refuel a Starlifter about three hours out of Christchurch on the southbound flight would not be available in time.

Tuesday and Wednesday had been set aside as alternative days for the mission but this reduced the flexibility of the operation, he said.

About nine tonnes of cargo will be dropped to scientists and civilians spending the winter at the McMurdo and South Pole stations. Supplies for the New Zealanders at Scott Base will be included in the McMurdo .drop. This is the fourth year in succession a winter drop has been made.
