N.Z. men first and second in world ploughing
NZPA Launceston The New Zealand ploughman. lan Miller, has been named 1982 world ploughing champion Miller, aged 42. a Gore farmer, won the two-day event at Longford, near Launceston. Tasmania, with a total of 313.75 points out of a possible 480. He received the World Ploughing Organisation’s Perpetual Trophy, a gold replica of a plough valued at $17,000.
It was a winning double for New Zealand. A North Island dairy farmer, Elvery Hunt, aged 47. was the runner-up. with 312.5 points. Hunt later said that the last furrow of his grassland plot probably cost him the title. A Norwegian truck driver. Sven Arne Heum, aged 29, was third. New Zealand had won the title last year. The 37 ploughmen from 19 countries spent most of Tuesday competing in driving rain at the championships, held at the Mount Ireh property in northern Tasmania. Miller, who was competing in his second world championships, said he faced strongest opposition from his countryman and from the Austrian team. He was second in both the barley stubble and grassland sections of the competition.
