GM, Ford in lead
General Motors produced more cars and commercial vehicles in 1981 than any other vehicle manufacturer, but Ford produced the world's best-selling car. On a global basis. GM produced 6,762.000 cars and commercial vehicles and Ford, next in line, produced 4.402.000 Of. which 823.000were Escorts. Third on the line was Toyota with 3.290.000 units: Toyota had previously topped the list of best-sellers with its Corolla.
while the Escort and its derivatives in Europe. America and South Africa topped the individual model chart. Volkswagen Golf production amounted to 759.000 units in 1981. The' top 10 car and commercial vehicle producers in 1981 were: General Motors 6.762.000. Ford 4.402.000. Toyota 3.290.000, Nissan 2.814.000. Volkswagen 2.196.000. Peugeot/Citroen 1.585.000. Renault 1.525.000. Fiat 1.364.000. Toyo Kogvo 1.230.000. Chrysler 1.082.000.
