Passive solar heating

Passive solar heating may he the answer to heating requirements for the homes of the future. A passive solar energy system works by natural means as distinguished from solar systems using a mechanical pump or fan. Already there are two homes in Christchurch and several in the North Island, particularly in Auckland, where, passive solar heatingis used to heat the home. In most cases the system is integrated into the architecture of the building and in this way building materials serve a double purpose.

Large areas of solar window space are essential to act as collectors for the sun's heat. The heat absorbed is dispersed throughout the house by means of a ducting system. It is essential that-the windows be carefully designed to eliminate the problems of glare and summer over-heating. The construction materials must have thermal mass for the storage of solar heat. There are varying passive solar heating systems which have been developed and these are extensively used in the United States of America.
